It is home to 550 bird species, zebras, giraffes, warthogs, waterbuck, Thompson gazelles’ lions and more. The park offers varied diversity and a migration corridor for elephants that go to Lake Manyara National Park located on the other side. Tarangire is also close to the Maasai steppe, hence the movement of wildlife is common. The Maasai Steppe is an important ecosystem in northeastern Tanzania that covers approximately 40,000 square kilometers or 15,444 square miles. Tarangire River passes through the middle of the park and is the only source of water for wildlife which is crucial during the dry season. It is especially important for elephants due their daily water consumption per individual of approximately 25 – 50 gallons.

Ngorongoro Crater is the only crater in the world boasting a remarkable concentration of wildlife living in diverse habitats, a natural sanctuary for some of the densest populations of large mammals in Africa. Due to its enclosed nature the Ngorongoro Crater has effectively formed its own ecosystem. It is approximately 16 to 19 kilometres (10 to 12 miles) in diameter, and the height of its walls range between 400 and 610 metres or 1,312 and 2,000 feet. It has earned a fabled reputation as one of Africa’s most unique natural wonders, it is the biggest intact (unbroken) volcanic caldera on Earth. Ngorongoro Crater is thought to have formed about 2.5 million years ago due to an active volcano cone collapsing inwards after a massive eruption. As per archaeologists and geological research records, it is suggested that the caldera may have originally been a higher mountain peak than Mt Kilimanjaro.
